23.SEPTEMBER.2007

Woke up early and drove down the road to Fox Glacier to do our half day hike. A bit irritating since it rained off and on the entire day. The hike was about three hours. The first hour was hiking up the mountain just to get to the glacier, then 45 minutes on the glacier, and then our hike back to the bus.
The glacier was beautiful however, but if I were to do it again I would do the full day hike. Just so I could actually do some climbing on the glacier instead of just walking on top of it. The interesting thing was our hike up the mountain was through a rainforest type setting. Our guide said it’s the one place in the world where you have a temperate rainforest with the formation of a glacier. Also there is this green moss that grows on the mordor (lord of the rings) like rocks that only grows in unpolluted environments. Pretty freaking cool if you ask me. Spite the rain and all, it was definitely a good time.

We drove to Wanaka for the night though Haast Pass, which is acclaimed to be the best scenic drive in the country. Despite the sun going down and the dreary weather it still held true to being truly beautiful. With snow-capped mountains in the distance and a never-ending rainbow, it had to have been the best drive of our lives!
We arrived in Wanaka at dark and checked into a backpackers. And from all the backpackers we’ve stayed in this one was the best yet, plus we got the whole place to ourselves since it was off-season for the mountain.
